Become Ordained in Connecticut: Your Guide to Legally, Spiritually, and Academically Preparing for Wedding Officiant Ministry and More

Becoming ordained in Connecticut to officiate weddings is a rewarding opportunity to serve your community while celebrating one of life’s most significant milestones. Connecticut law outlines specific requirements for wedding officiants, and the Christian Leaders Alliance (CLA) provides study-based credentials to ensure you meet these standards and excel in this sacred role.

Understanding Connecticut’s Wedding Officiant Laws

In Connecticut, the authority to solemnize marriages is governed by Connecticut General Statutes § 46b-22. The law specifies that the following individuals are authorized to officiate weddings:

  • Religious Officials: Ministers, priests, rabbis, and other clergy members who are ordained by a recognized religious organization.
  • Judicial Officials: Judges, justices of the peace, and magistrates authorized to perform marriages within their jurisdiction.

Religious officiants must be ordained by a recognized religious organization or denomination. While Connecticut does not require officiants to register with the state, having proper documentation of ordination is essential for compliance and to provide proof if requested.

After officiating a wedding, the officiant must complete and sign the marriage license and return it to the issuing town clerk’s office for official recording.

Ordination Story in Connecticut

My name is Ian Longest. I have been married to my wonderful wife Krista for 26 years and we have 2 adult children, our son Matthew who’s 22 Become ordained in Connecticutand our daughter who’s about to be 20. We currently live in a small town in Connecticut. My personal journey with Christ I guess began many years ago when I was about 8 or so when my mother brought me to a church near where we lived. Even though we were not a family of faith or church my mother felt compelled to take my sister and I to a church for awhile. Soon after however we moved away and never went to church again. Throughout my teenage years I would ask my friends about church and even dated a girl that brought me to church. I occasionally went to church but was never very serious about it. Many years later my wife and I decided to attend a church. Interestingly enough it was a church I went to in my teens, a Christian and Missionary Alliance church. After a couple weeks there it was then when we both realized that we needed Christ in our lives and we gave our lives to Christ, being baptized in our Pastor’s pool in August 2008 (COLD). That started the next chapter for us in our journey.

I felt the calling into the Men’s Ministry shortly after going to an Iron Sharpens Iron men’s conference. After working with my pastor to begin the learning process I started to dive head first into discipleship and leading men’s Bible studies. Shortly after that I was presented an opportunity to attend Bethel Seminary for Men’s Ministry Leadership training and education.

Following my time at Bethel Seminary I was hooked on learning more and more about the Bible and the background behind it. When I started researching places to go to learn I came across Christian Leaders Institute. Because CLI was online and free I was able to keep learning and didn’t have to incur the debt that comes with going to most colleges. I took a path through Christian Leaders Alliance to become ordained. Since completing my ordination I have been able to perform my son’s wedding and also be recognized with our local church as a Men’s pastor.

As I move towards the future I hope to continue my education with CLC and to continue to bless the men around me with the many things I learn through CLC.
