My Journey to Becoming a Wedding Officiant in South Carolina
My name is Mark Kneuper, and I have been a practicing general surgeon for 32 years. I’ve been married to the love of my life, Jean, for almost 35 years, and we have two wonderful children, Robby and Katie.
I met Jean during my surgery residency on a blind date. The odds of us ever meeting, let alone getting married, were so slim that we both consider it a clear example of divine intervention. Indeed, I have always felt that God has guided my life.
My life has been richly blessed—blessed with love, family, and friendship, blessed with financial success, and most importantly, blessed with a spirituality that blossomed and grew during my 30s. Though I was raised as a cradle Catholic, it was during this time that my faith truly matured. I began hosting an early morning Bible study in my office, completed seven years of Bible Study Fellowship, and witnessed the Holy Spirit’s palpable presence during an expansion project at our church. My wife and I deepened our faith further through multiple ACTS retreats.
Life’s Challenges and Faith’s Resilience
For a time, everything seemed good. But life’s challenges soon tested us. As our children grew older, parenting became more difficult. Financial difficulties arose after we built a large home, which brought higher property taxes and income taxes. Our children attended an expensive private school, and we struggled to rein in our spending. These financial strains led to disagreements between Jean and me about budgeting and child-rearing. We stopped functioning as a team, and it drove a wedge between us.
It came to a crisis point. Something had to change.
We sold our big house and downsized after our children moved out. While our daughter excelled in college, we faced heartbreaking struggles with our son, Robby. He battled mental illness and anxiety, which led to substance abuse. He dropped out of college and couldn’t hold a job.
Then came the call every parent dreads. While I was at work, Robby’s best friends, Eric and Westin, called to say, “We’ve lost Robby.” He had taken his own life.
Stunned, I sat at my desk and prayed to God for strength. The following weeks and months were a blur, marked by grief and pain. It remains the most difficult experience of my life, and I doubt I’ll ever fully heal from it.
Yet, even in the depths of our sorrow, God’s presence was undeniable. Jean and I could have easily blamed one another for Robby’s struggles and loss, but that never happened. Our faith and matrimonial bond held firm. As we emerged from that dark time, our marriage grew stronger than ever.
A Call to Serve
Over the past seven years, I have remained close to Robby’s friends. Our family ranch has become a place of connection, where we gather to hunt, work, or simply enjoy one another’s company. These young men have grown to know me on a deeper level, and I’ve observed how they notice the way Jean and I treat each other. Without explicitly advertising it, they’ve also seen our Christianity reflected in how we live our lives.
So, when Westin recently asked me to officiate his wedding, I was deeply honored. I’ve never done anything like that before. I’m not a particularly strong public speaker, and I had no idea how to officiate a wedding. But his request touched me so much that I couldn’t say no.
Finding Christian Leaders Institute
That’s when I discovered Christian Leaders Institute (CLI). A quick Google search on how to become a wedding officiant in South Carolina led me to this invaluable resource. I wanted to learn how to officiate a Christ-centered wedding ceremony, and CLI provided exactly what I needed.
The step-by-step learning process was incredibly helpful. The guidance on how to interview couples, the recommended Scriptures, and the sample ceremonies and vows gave me the tools I needed to prepare. When I brought these materials to the couple, I was surprised by how many things they hadn’t considered yet. Even as a student, I was able to help them navigate important decisions for their special day.
Looking Ahead
I don’t know where God will lead me after this experience, but I know this journey has been deeply meaningful. I trust that if I remain still and listen, He will continue to guide me in ways that fulfill His plan for my life.
