Become Ordained in South Dakota: Your Guide to Legally, Spiritually, and Academically Preparing for Wedding Officiant Ministry

Becoming ordained in South Dakota to officiate weddings is a fulfilling way to serve your community and celebrate life’s significant milestones. South Dakota law outlines specific requirements for wedding officiants, and the Christian Leaders Alliance (CLA) provides study-based credentials to help you meet these standards and thrive in this sacred role.

Understanding South Dakota’s Wedding Officiant Laws

In South Dakota, the authority to solemnize marriages is governed by state law, which allows the following individuals to officiate weddings:

  • Religious Officials: Ministers, priests, or other clergy members ordained by recognized religious organizations.
  • Judicial Officials: Judges and magistrates authorized to perform marriages.

Religious officiants must be ordained by a recognized organization. While South Dakota does not require officiants to register with the state, maintaining proper documentation of ordination is essential to comply with the law and provide proof if requested.

After officiating a wedding, the officiant must complete and sign the marriage license, returning it to the issuing county office for official recording.

My name is Teena Lykins, and I am a missionary and the founder and Executive Director of a small ministry in Northeast South Dakota. My family was called to this area 22 years ago, and we have been Become ordained in South Dakotaserving faithfully ever since.

I was saved as a young girl at the age of 9 and began seriously serving the Lord when I turned 20. In recent years, I became interested in pursuing ordination, which led me to discover the Christian Leaders Institute (CLI) through an online search. After taking a few classes, I decided to use CLI as the pathway not only to ordination but also to pursue a college education.

While I firmly believe that God has equipped me for His work through Jesus Christ, I also recognize the importance of expanding my knowledge and experience to better serve in ministry. CLI provides an excellent opportunity to grow both spiritually and academically.

My ultimate goal in life is to bring honor and glory to my Savior, Jesus Christ. I am convinced that growing in His Word is a vital way to achieve this goal. Becoming a Licensed Wedding Officiant is one more avenue to fulfill my calling, and I am deeply honored to serve the Kingdom in this way.
